Man Cave Flooring Ideas (with Pictures)

Looking to make the perfect man cave floor? You’ve come to the right place for ideas.

Your man cave floor is the base of your man cave. We understand how important it may be to you to have a suitable floor for your personalized man cave. Here, we’ll give you some tips, tricks, and ideas to get you started – and finished – on your flooring project.

Man Cave Flooring Styles

Before choosing the materials you’ll be using for your man cave floor, you might want to consider the style of flooring you’d prefer. You can consider things like color, texture, and anything else that correlates with the aesthetics of your room (or cave).

Some important things to remember include the paint color of the room and how the room will be used. Of course, you need to match your entire man cave and make it look good but how you use it is very important as well.

If you intend to have a lot of parties with food and drinks maybe a hard tile or even a luxury vinyl plank may be your best bet. These two options provide an easy clean-up after your parties whereas the carpet tends to get beat up quickly. But where you are located climate-wise could affect these decisions as well. A lot to think about!

Soft Floors

You might consider soft, comfortable flooring if your man cave is on the smaller side. It also works if you plan on using your floor as a sitting space – think video games with your buddies like when you were kids.

Soft floors include carpet, LVP luxury vinyl plank, or even laminate.

Now carpet is definitely the softest out of the two but LVP and laminate offer the look of tile without the price tag and cool to the touch feel if you live in a colder city.

Here are some good uses to put soft floors in:

  • Video game
  • Movie
  • Yoga rooms (not work out!)
  • Meditation
  • Relax chill out room

Hard Floors

Hard floors are going to be easy to clean up. So if you are the party or hang out house your man cave could benefit from these hard floors:

  • Wood
  • Tile
  • Finished Concrete

The finished concrete look is really coming into style as there are so many ways to treat the concrete now and make it look cool. The downfall about this option like tile is that it can be cool to the touch so if you live in a colder environment it may not be enjoyable. But you can simply throw some cool rugs over it in places you travel the most!

Wood is a great hard floor for many cases but the problem is that you typically need a professional to install and then you will need to stay up on maintenance if you wear it down quickly. But this option is great for a classic look and very warm to the touch. Stains have come a long way so you don’t necessarily have to stick to the browns anymore!

Gym Flooring

If you plan on using your man cave for physical activity, such as working out, you might want to consider the safety of your floor. Look for gym flooring that is slip-resistant, sturdy, and forgiving. In the case of a fall, you will be well-protected.  A soft gym floor does many things for your man cave work out room. Here are the benefits of having a soft floor:

  • Your weights will not destroy you floor when you drop them
  • The soft floor makes working out a little quieter for the people in your house
  • If you work out barefoot on your squats then the floor isn’t going to be as cold

Now, this option doesn’t have to break the bank and this is a simple DIY project. You can pick these mats up from your closest DIY store or even order them online. Many of them snap together like a puzzle.

TIP: you can throw these mats under a carpet to create a plush feel and save some money.

Theme

The theme of your man cave may play a critical role in which style you should choose.

If you want a dark man cave, consider dark flooring with a bright color pop of a specific logo or design that matches your theme. Or, you could install a light-colored floor with a dark theme-related color pop design.

Light-colored floors are harder to keep clean, depending on the material you use.

Flooring Material

Once you have a plan for the appearance of your new man cave floors, you can begin shopping for the flooring materials you’ll need to complete your project. Here are some ideas to help you out in this step. We will go into a little more detail on the some of the options mentioned above.

Concrete Floor

We’ll start with a simple concrete floor design since a lot of men have a garage man cave or basement man cave. A simple, but awesome, garage flooring option or basement floor idea involves the use of concrete stain on top of the concrete flooring in a color that suits your style and design ideas.

Many people soften up the floor with rugs to get a nice contrast. If you have too much exposed concrete it will start to look industrial or like a garage but that may be the look you are going for!!

Garage Floor Tiles

Garage floor mats (soft garage floor tiles or rubber flooring) are a super simple flooring option for your man cave-garage conversion. This is a great choice for anyone who is looking for an easy DIY project, and it provides the added bonus of safety if you’re planning to use your man cave as a workout room.

Be sure that you’re only converting garages that are not susceptible to mold growth if you’re choosing this option. You’ll need to consider moisture-resistant epoxy flooring as a floor coating to finish your cement floor if your man cave is subject to mold.

Epoxy Flooring

Speaking of epoxy flooring, adding an epoxy coating to the concrete could be all you need to do. It’s not only a good option to prevent mold, it looks good, too. Check out our article on the cost of epoxy flooring.

Out of all the garage flooring ideas, this is the most popular choice.

Tile

Tiles are a great option. Tiles come in a vast assortment of different materials and styles such as ceramic tiles and colored porcelain tile. They also come in a wide variety of colors.

Keep in mind that this flooring option is a bit more time-consuming to install than some of the other options – but, the outcome is always worth the extra effort!

As mentioned above the cleanup on tile is simple and easy. And also it’s worth mentioning again like concrete you can add some carpets or area rugs to soften up the feel and look. Check out our article on choosing man cave rugs for any room.

Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood floors are great and they can be stained to many different shades.

Engineered hardwood is one type of hardwood flooring you can choose. This option is less expensive due to its material make-up existing of a fine-wood top layer with less expensive composite wood underneath (don’t worry, the composite wood is not visible after installation).

If you have existing wood flooring in your man cave, you can strip them and restain them to a new color of your choice. In my opinion, gray, ebony, and dark walnut are the best stain options to provide that “man cave feel”.

Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl flooring is another awesome material to consider for your man cave floor. Vinyl flooring is one of the most versatile options – color, texture, size, and shape are all selectable, variable options.

Vinyl floors are easy to clean and maintain, not too hard to install, they’re durable, and they have a long lifespan – they have an even better, longer lifespan if you splurge a bit and go with a luxury vinyl option.

It’s a great way to get the look of hardwood without the price tag or maintenance. All you need is a damp mop for a quick cleanup.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) Colors

*Opinion: If I wanted to get the hardwood floor look without spending hardwood floor money, I would highly consider (and probably, ultimately go with) the use of luxury vinyl planks. Aside from being more affordable than wood flooring, luxury plank-style vinyl flooring is easier to install and maintain than real hardwood.

LVP Thickness (thicker the better but more expensive)

Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is similar to vinyl flooring in appearance. However, these floors are a little harder to maintain as they’re not as water-resistant.

Pros: Laminate flooring comes in easy-to-install interlocking tiles. Also, they really do look nice if you’re looking for a wood floor look!

But we here at man cave expert would recommend LVP!

Carpet

Carpet is a good choice if you’re looking for a comfortable floor to sit on or just simply enjoy the look and feel of a carpet. Carpet, like many of your other options, comes in many different colors and textures. Remember to consider your man cave theme as well as foot traffic and stain possibilities when choosing your carpet color.

As a man cave expert, we have to choose tile over carpet. Maybe we party too much but it wins in our book because of the ability to clean it. But if you have a steam cleaner and you don’t mind a few stains here and there Carpet is soooo much more comfortable.

Trampoline Floor

Wouldn’t a trampoline floor be awesome for a ridiculously fun hangout place?! Consider installing a trampoline hole, trampoline mat, and springs to a designated area in your man cave to make all the other guys on the block jealous.

Area Rug

If an installation project isn’t your thing, you may want to consider simply buying an area rug for your man cave. If you are going to be walking around in bare feet, it will at least keep you warm. It is an easy and cheap way to update your room and get your man cavyness started. (cavyness is not a word….)

An area rug can keep your feet warm and add some color into your dark dark man cave.

Installation

Installation of your floors can range from very simple to complicated and time-consuming depending on the flooring you choose.

You can always try installing your own man cave floors. Consider asking a friend for help and using online resources for tips.

If you’re not a DIY kind of guy, don’t worry – you can call a specialist to get the job done quickly and effortlessly.

The cost to install each type of flooring has been ranked from cheapest at the top to most expensive at the bottom. Of course some items could be cheaper if you go with a cheaper option but this gives you a good idea of what to expect.

  1. Carpet
  2. Laminate/Vinyl
  3. Luxury Vinyl Plank
  4. Tile
  5. Engineered Hardwood
  6. Hardwood
