If you’re a football fan, your man cave wouldn’t be complete without at least one football jersey hanging up on the wall. But if you are concerned about putting holes in your wall, here are three ways to hang a football jersey on the wall without using nails. In addition to not damaging your wall, all three methods take less than 10 minutes and cost less than $100.
I previously wrote an article about how to hang sports jerseys on the wall, but I figured I would break it down more thoroughly with pictures and step-by-step instructions specifically for football jerseys.
1. DIY Football Jersey Hanger
This DIY method for hanging a jersey on the wall is simple, but it works and you can do in 2 minutes. While you can find a stud, hammer in a nail, and then hang the jersey on a wire hanger; we recommend following the steps below for the best results.
- Find the spot on the wall where you want to hang your jersey and mark it with a pencil.
- Place a Command Strip Hook on the wall so that the hook lines up with the pencil mark. Using a Command Strip Hook means that you don’t have to put any holes in the wall and you can easily move the jersey to a new location later.

- Put your jersey on a hanger. Wire hangers work great for t-shirts, but don’t hold up over time to the weight of a jersey. Basic white plastic hangers will work just fine or you could go for a more heavy duty non-slip velvet hanger to keep the jersey from sliding around. Turn the hanger upside down to hide more of the hanger.
- Hang the hanger on the Command Strip Hook.
2. Hang Your Football Jersey with the JerseyGenius Hanging System
The JerseyGenius is an innovative way to easily hang up any type of jersey and is a step up from the DIY hanger method. Here are the step-by-step instructions for hanging up a football jersey with the JerseyGenius.
- Find the spot on the wall where you want to hang your jersey and mark it with a pencil.
- Place a Command Strip Hook on the wall so that the hook lines up with the pencil mark. Using a Command Strip Hook means that you don’t have to put any holes in the wall and you can easily move the jersey to a new location later.
- Lay the jersey down flat on a table and place the shoulder bracket over the neck hole.
- Put the first two pivot joints into place with the straight side facing upwards and add additional pivot joints to match the shape of the jersey.
- Slide the jersey onto the assembled JerseyGenius one arm at a time through the neck hole.
- Position JerseyGenius so that horizontal bar on backside of shoulder bracket rests on top of the Command Strip Hook.
3. Frame Your Football Jersey in a Shadow Box
If you have ever tried to mount a jersey inside of a shadow box, you know how difficult it can be to get it to sit exactly right. That’s why we recommend a case that comes with a built in hanger that allows you to simply hang your jersey up inside the frame.
- Open the shadow box and lay it out on a flat surface.
- Place the hanger through the sleeves of the jersey. There are several different types of hangers used depending the the exact display case you get, but for this example it is a clear cylinder tube.
- Close and latch the case.
- Flip the case over. Attach 6 pairs of Command Picture Hanging Strips (size large) to the edges of the frame. 4 pairs hold up to 16 pounds, and the frame with a jersey inside takes it right up to the limit. I’d play it safe by adding two more pairs. Please note that these are different than the command hooks from the tutorial above.
- Before you peel the piece off the back of the Command Strips to expose the adhesive, find the spot on the wall you want to hang the frame and hold it in place making sure it’s level. Mark the position on the wall with a pencil.
- Using the pencil marks as a guide and following the Command Strips instructions, hang it up! Ultimately, a dirty old Fred Jackson jersey is not exactly worthy of a shadow box. For the picture, I temporarily hung it up on a pegboard with some pegboard hooks – which is actually a great solution if your man cave is in the garage or basement.
