How Much Should Dumbbells Cost? 3 Ways To Save Money on Dumbbells

Dumbells cost on average $1 to 2$ per pound. But just because dumbbells are usually priced at $1-2 per pound, do you really have to pay that much?

In our opinion, dumbbells are one piece of fitness equipment where you should be looking to save some money. Here are 3 ways you can get dumbbells for less than $1 per pound and in some cases less than half that.

1. Shop Locally

CAP Barbell Solid Hex Dumbbell, Single (30-Pound) If you look for a standard set of dumbbells online, you’re going to be in for some sticker shock. Take the basic hex dumbbell for example. At your local sporting goods store, they are probably right around $1 per pound. In our experience, most sporting goods and fitness stores will have weight sales once or twice per year. If you can be patient and keep your eye out for sales, you can get some good deals.

If you look on Amazon, the same exact hex dumbbells are selling for three times as much! Why are they so expensive online? The answer may be obvious – shipping costs. There’s no such thing as free shipping. Whether online retailers charge for shipping or offer free shipping but jack up the price of the weights, the end result is the same. You end up paying way more than you should for a set of hex dumbbells if you buy them online.

2. Where To Find Used Dumbbells

Used DumbbellsWhen it comes to fitness equipment, new is usually better than used. Dumbbells are an exception to that rule. When buying cardio equipment like a treadmill or elliptical machine, you’re better off looking for new machines. With so many moving parts and electrical components, a lot can go wrong.

Dumbbells on the other hand are about as simple as it gets. Unless you make a habit of dropping them directly on a concrete floor, it’s pretty difficult to damage dumbbells. Used dumbbells are just as good as new ones.

Every January people all over the world make a New Year’s resolution to work out more. They sign up for a gym membership or they buy a bunch of fitness equipment. And by the end of February, they stop working out, cancel their gym membership, and sell their workout gear.

Capitalize on this opportunity by looking for dumbbells at garage sales, Craigslist, and Facebook Marketplace. You may have to do some searching, but oftentimes you will be able to find a set of perfectly good dumbbells for less than half the cost of a new set.

Or better yet, ask your friends. Your friends will probably be looking to take exercise equipment off their hands for free! If not for free ask them how much and be ready to bargain. You shouldn’t be paying more than half the cost of a new set unless they are brand new. And remember even if the dumbbell looks a little old, it will probably work you out the same!

3. Consider Adjustable Dumbbells

Adjustable dumbbells are dumbbells whose weight can be adjusted as needed to make them heavier or lighter. One set of adjustable dumbbells can replace an entire rack of traditional dumbbells – saving you both money and space. There are two main types of adjustable dumbbells – quick-lock and spin-lock.

Bowflex SelectTech 552 Version 2 | Two Adjustable Medium Dumbbells | Black, Red & Grey Quick-lock adjustable dumbbells allow you to quickly change the weight of the dumbbell through a mechanism such as turning a dial. The most popular quick-lock dumbbells are the Bowflex SelectTech 552. The Bowflex adjustable dumbbells adjust from 5 to 52.5 pounds, with a total of 15 weight settings. If you were to buy a set of 15 dumbbell pairs from 5 to 52.5 pounds, it would cost around $800. Bowflex SelectTech 552 dumbbells cost less than half.

Spin-lock adjustable dumbbells use weight plates just like a barbell. You put the desired weights on each side of dumbbell bar and lock them in place with a nut that spins onto the bar. The Yes4All set allows you to set the weight of each dumbbell between 40 to 200 pounds. Spin-lock adjustable dumbbells don’t allow you to switch weight as quickly as quickly as the quick-lock models, but they are less expensive.

If you want to have a complete dumbbell set, adjustable dumbbells are a great way to save money. We’ve put together a list of the best adjustable dumbbells under $100.
